Default Air Bomber or Bomb Aimer

I was a crew member on Coastal Command Wellingtons and we only had the navigator to drop bombs or depth charges. I have 2 friends who piloted Bomber Command aircraft, one on Lancasters and completed a tour and the other flew a Halifax.

Until I read a recent thread about Heavy Conversion Units I had never heard of Air Bombers. Both my friends always referred to this crew member as a Bomb Aimer and I'm surprised that it had another name. Any explanations ?

    Jack,

The official name of the trade (introduced in 1942) was Air Bomber (along the same lines as the old Air Gunner or Air Observer) but unofficially/informally referred to as Bomb Aimer. Interestingly, however, the badge was a winged 'B' rather than, as might have been expected, an 'AB' one in the style of the Air Gunner's 'AG' badge.

My RAAF father who was with 104 RAF & then 31 SAAF in Italy was an Observer ,also called Navigator by the SAAF .He was also a Bombaimer ,also called Air Bomber, in some sortie reports .On his SAAF flights there was a Navigator as well as himself, the Bombaimer. He flew in Wellingtons with 104 RAF & Liberators with 31 SAAF .
His Lib. disappeared in Italy Oct .1944.

His uniform badge was an O & half wing but the photo was probably taken in 1943.

    Anne and Errol.

Thank you for your replies. I am now better informed and I am glad I am not a punter. I would have lost money.

    Jack.
