Default 407 Sqn RCAF Donald S. Mather

RCAF 407sqn MATHER, Donald Stuart (R.54288) - Born 26 August 1916 in Ottawa, Canada. Enlisted in Ottawa, 13 August 1940. Promoted Flight Sergeant, 1 October 1941. Missing 10 October 1941 (No.407 Squadron, Hudson AM586).

I am looking for information about my Canadian uncle named above. I believe 407 was stationed at Thorney Island UK. in 1941. I am interested in any details that anyone might have about him and in particular any details regarding his mission and aircraft, on October 10, 1941. I have only started researching recently and would be grateful for any information that anyone might have. I have been to visit his memorial at Runnymede UK.

As a wartime casualty, his full RCAF file is available for viewing at the National Library and Archives of Canada (Record Group 24, Box 2812). From a limied data base I can provide the following:

Graduated and promoted Leading Aircraftman, 15 November 1940; posted that date to No.10 Elementary Flying Training School; to No.5 Service Flying Training School, 4 January 1941. Graduated, qualified as pilot and promoted Sergeant, 20 March 1941. To No.31 General Reconnaissance School, 30 March 1941. To Embarkation Depot, 21 June 1941. To RAF overseas, 5 July 1941. Promoted Flight Sergeant, 1 October 1941. Missing, presumed dead, 10 October 1941.

Thank you for your reply. Your information has been very helpful. I will try the National Archives search. I doubt that I will be able to find much more information. However, thanks to kind folks like yourself, I now know more about my uncle than I ever did.
    Cheers

    Default RCAF Personel Records

    Hello Ottca ?,

pop off a letter or fax to:
    Personnel Records Unit,
    Library and Archives Canada,
    395 Wellington Street,
    Ottawa,

Ask for your uncles service record and also for any of the men on the aircraft from RCAF that died that day and you ought to get them within a few days or weeks, it will be of interest to you. Of course if you can visit them in person that might reduce their workload a bit.

Typo on Hudson serial: A"N"586 should read A"M"586.
