    Default 7 JAN 1943 : who shot down this JU 88 ?

    I found in Toulouse area the remains of a Junker 88 which was shot down on 7 Jan 1943 while on approach to Francazal Airfield; It was most likely shot by a mosquito (20MM shell from Oerlikon gun was found on site);

    Can somebody help me trace the allies record on this date ? Who scored this kill ?

    I have traced the names of the german crew, I would love to find the GB crew names now..

    Thanks a lot to help me complete the puzzle.

    Are you sure about the year? I've a claim which might match for 7 January 1944, but there was nothing (for Mosquitos) even close on 7 January 1943.

    Well, for what it's worth, a 23 Squadron Mosquito flown by F/L Lawson claimed a Ju 88 and an He 111 "near Toulouse" on 6/7 January 1944. He also saw another aircraft destroyed by its own airfield flak. On the same evening, also near Toulouse, W/C Murphy of the same squadron claimed a Do 217 destroyed.

    Well, thanks a lot, this is very interesting but I have then two different ways :

    - it is possible that the date 7 Jan 1943 is wrong : one of my witness is more inclined on 1944 rather 1943 (not easy to get 100 % correct date from them : they are aged 80 ++)
    then your information is correct (kill on 7 Jan 1944) but the information I got on my side with the names of the german guys is useless (it clearly mentions 1943).
    Can somebody check Luftwaffe archives and find if a Junker 88 was shot down in Toulouse suburbs on 7 Jan 1943 or on 7 Jan 1944 ?

    - can the 20MM shell I come from another type of aircraft than the mosquito ? which aircraft had a oerlikon gun mounted ? The beaufighter ? did we have any of them strolling in this area in Jan 1943 ?

    Well, I fear I have now more questions than before.. This is the game, right ?

    Thanks for anyone who can help.

    Hi Muxt,

    you were right. I met yesterday an elderly man in the area who noted in his booklet during the war what actually happened :

    he clearly wrote "german aircraft 6 Janv 1944"

    The 1943 path was wrong;

    so the remains I found are most likely the ones of F.O. Lawson kill.

    So, I now have two questions :

    1) who can provide me with more data on this pilot (Lawson)? did he survive the war ?
    2) I would love to find the names of the german guys on board the JU88 : how could have access to the german files of WW2 ? (is there a "Luftwaffe forum" ? )

    This would allow me to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

    Thanks all for advice.

    Hi Gilles:

    As I've just posted in another thread, another good place to ask for loss information is:

    http://www.luftwaffe-bullet-board.com/

    You have to register but you can post in English if you like.

    You might also try to track down Andreas Brekken. He's developing a Luftwaffe loss list and is often generous with info (if he has it) for individual incidents.
