    Default Lerwick, L7268

    Hi All

On 14 Oct 1941, Lerwick I L7268 of 4 (C) OTU crashed into the sea killing 9 crew according to Air Britainís listing in Militaria.

GRO lists the following as being with 4 (C) OTU and on the Runnymede: -

    KIDD, GEORGE
    KIDD, JAMES KERR
    WAINWRIGHT, STANLEY OWEN

GRO lists the following as being with 3 Radio School and on the Runnymede: -

    SINCLAIR, GRAHAM SIMPSON
    SMITH, ALBERT WILLIAM

I suspect these two may have aboard the Lerwick but are recorded under their previous posting.

There are three more listed on the Runnymede, who I suspect could have been aboard the aircraft: -

    GILMOUR, GORDON DUDLEY RCAF
    JOHNSTON, JOSEPH ALLAN RNZAF
    SPACKMAN, PETER RAAF

This gives a total of eight. Can anyone confirm my suspicions or otherwise and advise me who the ninth crew member was?

    Happy New Year

    Malcolm

Sorry Malcolm your maths is wrong.

Botha L6178 of 3 RS was lost into the Clyde so the 3 RS men were on her, not the Lerwick.

12 were onboard the Lerwick, nine killed with three survivors.

    Malcolm,
The first nine named by Ross were killed on L7268, TAYLOR, MARSHALL and COLE survived although injured.
    Ross,
Were Graham W. SINCLAIR and Albert W. SMITH on Botha L6178 ? I've both on my 'unaccounted' list. Who was the third crew member ?
    Happy New Year.
    Henk.

    Malcolm,
Just in case you're looking for:
Adjudant (Pilot) Raymond G. BETTE - svcnr 30562 missing; he survived an accident 15-3-1941 on Sunderland P9624.
    Regards,
    Henk.
