Default Geoffrey Rhodes WW2 'bomber' ?

    Season's Greetings to all.

I have been asked to try and confirm, or otherwise, a family story that a GOEFFREY RHODES was a 'bomber' in the RAF in WW2.

I wonder whether the use of their wording "was a bomber" is significant?
Could that possibly mean he was a bomber aimer?

Of course, it might just be a second or third hand family interpretation of his being in the RAF, and that he claimed to have served/flown on bombers during the WW2.

The only other information that I have about Geoffrey is that he was born in Huddersfield in 1921.

Any comments about 'was a bomber' would be appreciated, as would any identification of Mr. Rhodes as having served in the RAF, possibly in Bomber Command.

    Many thanks,
    Chris

    Default Bomb aimer?

Probably the word came from the trade as you say of Bomb Aimer also known as Air Bomber.

You may be able to get the chap's service record which will give his postings form RAF Innsworth. Do you know if you man survived the war of was a casualty? National arives kew hold all the sqn and staion records. Anty qs let us know. Any other info however seemingly significant also post it up here it might be useful.

    Hi Chris and Peter
just a footnote, but someone pointed out on this Forum a few weeks ago that Personnel records are no longer at RAF Innsworth but have been moved to Cranwell.

This is the link to the service record information, post number #8.

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?t=797

The birth in Hudderfield shows he had no middle initial so running the name into the London Gazette: (Both full name and G. Rhodes also)
    http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?GeoType=London

Gives no returns likely to be him, which only suggests he wasn't commishioned, he may have been an NCO for the duration but it might be worth checking in more detail.

There was nothing likely in the Flight Archives either.

If you can get family access to the service records might be the best option.

    Default Geoffrey Rhodes WW2 'bomber'

    Gentlemen,

Thanks you for your replies which point me in the right direction.
If I can find anything more about Geoffrey Rhodes and his supposed service in the RAf, I will pass it on 'for the sake of good order' as my Norweign friends say.

    Regards to all,
    Chris
