Default Sgt McKenzie N.J. RNZAF of 115 Sqn

    Hello,

I'm looking after some information about Sgt McKenzie N.J. RNZAF serial 41596 from the
115 Sqn. He was a member of the Wellington X-3675 which was shot down on the 28 of August 1942 above Belgium. The aircraft crashed at Grand-Hallet, Belgium and he was taken prisoner. 3 other members were KIA (Sgt Sharpe William .J, Sgt Carr Leslie G. and W/O Smith John G.) and 1 could escape (Sgt Cope J.E.). Wellington was shot down by Hptm Bietmann 5./NJG 1. The 3 members who were KIA were buried at the Allied Cemetery of Saint-Trond and transfered to Heverlee after the war.
    Thanks.

    Alexander,

You can read about him here:

    http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-WH2-1RAF-c12.html#n249

Note that he is MacKenzie (not a McKenzie).

He also has an entry in Colin Hanson's excellent 'By Such Deeds - Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force 1923-1999':

MacKENZIE, Warrant Officer Norrice John, mid.
    NZ41596; Born Greenpark, 12 Nov 1914; RNZAF 19 Jan 1941 to 12 Dec 1945; PoW Aug 1942 to Apr 1945; Wireless Operator-Air Gunner.
Citation Mention in Despatches (NY1946) For meritorious service whilst a Prisoner of War. Served with 115 Sqn RAF (Wellington), becoming a PoW on being shot down 28/29 Aug 1942 during a raid on Nuremberg. A brother, Fg Off M MacKenzie, RAF, was lost on operations in the Middle East on 27 May 1941.

    Errol,

Thank you very much for this information. Do you think that the RNZAF museum can help me with extra information about his escape?
    Regards,

    Alexander

You probably already have this information, but I have the ORB for this raid. I had been
resaerching the crew of Wellington X3647 that was also lost on this op.

    The ORB has the following:

15 aircraft (9 from "A" flight and 6 from "B" flight) were detailed to attack targets
SAARBRUCKES and NURENBERG in accordance with form B.909 recieved from Headquarters,
    No. 3 Group.

    Wellington Mk. III
    D X3675
    W/O Smith, J. Captain
    Sgt. Cope, J. E. Navigator
    Sgt. McKenzie W/T Oprtr.
    Sgt. Carr, L. Fr. Gunner
    Sgt. Sharpe, W. Rr. Gunner

A/C D.X.3675 (Captain W/O Smith) Failed to return from operations.

There is also an entry relating to the raid from the monthly summary that fails to mention
the crew, however if you want this I can add it to the thread or email it. Just let me know.
