    Default Unaccounted airmen 23-10-1941

Checking the CWGC-Registers with my files found another name of an airman sofar missing in my files. What was the place of death registration for:
    LAC (Pilot u/t) Herbert R. JOHNSON - 656146 - age 22.

Proposed aircraft losses for this day:
    Hurricane I - V7245 - 59 OTU - crashed on landing Longtown.
    Magister I - L8079 - 16 EFTS - crashed on landing Burnaston.
Master III - W8569 - 5 FTS - crashed on overshoot at night Chetwynd.

Regards and thanks for your help.
    Henk.

    Henk,

Johnson was killed in the No.5 FTS Master, here is the ORB entry.

October 23rd 1941, “Master W8569 crashed near Chetwynd, the pilot, 656146 LAC Johnson, H.R. of No.66 Course, being killed.”

Sansom, he is listed as KOAS in Dec 11th 1941 Flilght Magazine.

The Q4 register lists an Eric V Sanson age 26 in Chippenham District, same district as Horan, a coincidence as Horan as you say above is DOAS..

As a possibilty I would suggest Turbinlight Havoc BJ496 of 1454 Flight, Colerne which dig on this day. Also Hurricane P2798 of 87S from nearby Charmy Down which was abandoned (with engine failure according to 'Wings over Gloucestershire')and crashed 'in the Marshfield/Cold Ashton area'; sufficiently close to the Wiltshire border and Colerne to be considered.

1454 Flt provided the light and 87S the fighter for experimental Turbinlight operations at this time ('RAF Flying Training and Support Units').

Thanks Dave. The Havoc could be correct as I've Sgt HARSHAM of 87 Sqn for this date safe on Hurricane P2798.
    Regards,
    Henk.
