    Default 199 Sqn Wellington 'EX-Q' 12-6-43

I have seen two serials for this a/c - HE277 and HZ277 - lost on this date. Both nos. check out as Wellingtons but my two sources differ. Can anyone tell me which one is correct and anything more about the loss? The source I have just says FTR en route to/from Dusseldorf.

    I have the crew as:

Sgt Clifford Raymond Andrews, RCAF R/108563
    and
    Sgt W.H. Bellhouse, RAFVR 1439058
    Sgt P.E.K.D. Merry, RAFVR 1338421
    Sgt W.E. Jackson, RAFVR 1219223
    Sgt L.R. Barrow, RAFVR 1321447

Chorley has it as HE277 and simply states lost without trace. It was indeed on Ops to Dusseldorf

    Cheers

    Default Clear as mud

Thanks Pavel, it's looking stronger for HZ but still not clearly. Allison & Hayward (I've been forgetting to credit Hayward too) also has it as HZ but Chorley and another source, have it as HE. Can anyone check the a/c movement card next time they're into them? Or is that a difficult thing to do?

    Hi Eddie and David,

from Mr. Chorley: "I very much suspect that the loss card gave HE277 and I failed to check against the Air-Britain serial register. Therefore, unless I advise otherwise please amend to HZ277."

The 199 ORB has the aircraft as Q-HZ 277.

Thanks Douglas for that extra confirmation, which I have noted in my files. Can you tell me now many ops the Andrews crew flew before they were lost?

The 199 ORB records that Sgt. C.R. Andrews R108563 was posted from 27 OTU to 199 Squadron wef 17/5/1943. His operational career and crew with 199 are as follows : -

    23-24/5/1943 : Bombing Operation Dortmund : Wellington X : EX-S HE634

    Sgt. C.R. Andrews Pilot
    Sgt. G.L. Heath Navigator
    Sgt. P.E.K. Merry Air Bomber
    Sgt. W.E. Jackson Wireless Operator/AG
    Sgt. L.R. Barrow Rear Gunner

    25-26/5/1943 : Bombing Operation Dusseldorf : Wellington X : EX-X HE 424

    Same crew as Dortmund 23-24/5/1943

    30-31/5/1943 : Mining Operation Lorient (Artichokes) : Wellington X : EX-X HE 424

    Same crew as Dortmund 23-24/5/1943

    11-12/6/1943 : Bombing Operation Dusseldorf : Wellington X : EX-Q HZ277

Crew failed to return. Same crew as Dortmund 23-24/5/1943 with the exception of Sgt. WH. Bellhouse replacing Sgt. Heath as navigator.

As a point of note, Sgt. Bellhouse would appear to have previously operated within the crew of Sgt. J.V. Spring. Sgt. Spring was posted to 199 from 27 OTU wef 11/5/1943. Unfortunately, I do not know why Sgt. Bellhouse had replaced Sgt. Heath as navigator in the Andrews crew for the Dusseldorf operation where the crew were killed.
