A - Killed on active service:
LAC (Pilot u/t) David C. ROSS - 1343838, and
LAC (Pilot u/t) William J.V. SAMUEL - 978580.

B - Not found Flight archives:
LAC (Pilot u/t) David N.S. BIRTWELL - 655454, and
LAC (Obs u/t) Frank F. MORGAN - 655915.

C - Proposed aircraft losses for this day:
Oxford I - L4626 - RAFC - flew into ground near Rauceby, Lincolnshire.
Oxford I - R5942 - RAFC - dived into ground Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire (alrady as a casualty on this a/c: F/O [Flying Instr.] E.M. COMPERTHWAITE - 62682 [fm Canada]).

D - Also looking for unit of Sgt Phillip N. LLOYD - 928435, commemorated on Panel 47 of the Runnymede Memorial.
It is possible that he was 6 OTU; Australian Archives have on file that Sgt Ernest G. PAINTER - RAAF 400287 (Runnymede Panel 63), was lost this day on Hudson II serial T9381.

Morgan was with No.4 AOS, he was killed along with one other crewman when they bailed out of a Botha. The ORB records that three men bailed out, I am nto sure what happened to the aircraft.

October 29th 1941, “Flying accident to Botha L6286. Owing to trouble during a navigation trip over the North Riding, the pilot ordered the crew to bail out. Three airmen did so, 55907 Cpl Jeffries D.A. landed safely. 655915 LAC Morgan F.F. was killed on landing by parachute. 1118545 AC2 Stewart G. bailed out, but up to present is missing.”

October 31st 1941, “Up to date there has been no news of 1118545 AC2 Stewart, who bailed out on the 29th October, 1941, Search is continuing.”

November 9th 1941, “Body of 1118545 AC2 Stewart G. found near RAF Catterick.”

Sergeant Lloyd was with No.6 (C)OTU as he was mentioned in their ORB, with a different serial for the aircraft.

October 29th 1941, “First snow started 9.0am. Hudson aircraft No.T9281 with occupants Sgt Pilots Painter and Lloyd failed to return from training flight; a heavy snow storm was prevailing at the time.”

I also have the following from the No.53 OTU ORB for the 29th.

October 29th 1941, “P/O Jodoin & Sgt Brunnetts killed in flying accident.”

T9381 was SOC 18/09/41.

T9281 was the No.6 OTU Hudson crewed by Painter and Lloyd

No.53 OTU losses were X4823 and P9459

Birtwell is in Flight Dec 18th 1941, KOAS, only the first two initials are given.

LAC F F Morgan is KOAS in Flight March 5 1942.

David C Ross age 19 registered Grantham district.
William J V Samuel age 21 also in the Grantham district
Great Gonerby is in this district.


Birtwell is in Sleaford District which it seems would be Sleaford and E kesteven, Lincs

Hi Henk
Ross,19,and Samuel, 21, registered at Grantham and W Kesteven, Lincolnshire, the right area for Gt Gonerby
Birtwell,22, registered at Sleaford,(full title Sleaford and E Kesteven) Lincolnshire, the area adjacent to Grantham and both within range of the RAF College at Cranwell.Rauceby doesn't appear in the Sleaford or Grantham lists, and I couldn't trace it on the Google map.

Rauncy could also be South Raunceby which was the site of an RAF Hospital during WW2, it is near Cranwell.

Hi Henk
I think I have found Rauceby about 2 Mls W of the town of Sleaford, but there is not just one there are two villages, if you zoom into the Google map far enough, N Rauceby and S Rauceby, they are close enough together for people to disregard the difference, and both are in the Sleaford area
Another point was I couldn't trace the man you already had on the Gonerby crash, E M Comperthwaite, either in the register or on CWGC. Is the spelling right?

I see it was a trick Question.His death is registered in the right area for the Gt Gonerby incident that Henk has him down for. It looks like Ross and Samuel were pupils
