Default "no retention of rank"? - P E Ipsen (117791, RAFVR)

Gazette Issue 41687 published on the 17 April 1959 states the following:

"Flight Lieutenant P. E. IPSEN (117791), no retention of rank. 16th Feb. 1959."

Could anyone explain, what this mean?

P E Ipsen which i presume is identical to Preben E Ipsen the later managing director of Falck ambulance flying service and flying instructor at a RAF flying course ("brush up") for Danish air force pilots in the fall of 1945.

Any further information on this man would be appreciated as well.

It means he was not entitled to use a higher acting rank such as Sqn Ldr etc. If he had been an acting Sqn Ldr at some point, he may not have held the rank long enough to be allowed to retain it in retirement.
