    Default P/O Messenger - 603 Sqn 1941/42

    Hello

Can anyone help with details of a P/O Messenger who apparently served with 603 Sqn from late 1941 until early 1942? Along with other aircrew of 603 Sqn this name is mentioned in the logbook of I.S.Loudon (A404691- RAAF pilot with 603 Sqn from Oct 41 – Feb 42). Loudon indicates Messenger was RAAF and departed the squadron for the Middle East on 8th Feb 1942 along with a Sgt Sendall RNZAF. There do not seem to be any Messengers who fit this profile on the AWM service record search. Perhaps he was an Australian serving in the RAF, or, the RAAF written in the logbook was actually a typo for RCAF? Any information would be welcome – initials, forenames, confirmation of nationality or subsequent service. Thanks in advance.

    regards, Drew H

    Drew,

    "Sgt Sendall RNZAF"

No New Zealander of this name served with the RNZAF or other Allied air force during WWII.

    Errol,

    Thanks for your reply.
Interesting. Another small mystery! If Sendall is not RNZAF then that casts doubt over Loudon’s classification of Messenger as RAAF. I checked Sendall on google and a pilot, W/O J.E. Sendall RCAF (R/87658), was killed as a passenger in a Hudson crash 30 Jun 43 near Khartoum. Possibly the same man from 603 Sqn. Perhaps someone has access to the 603 Sqn ORB to check for initials on these two pilots? Both Messenger and Sendall are not mentioned in The Definitive History of 603 Sqn Vol II.

    Drew
