    Default Missing Gunner

    Gents,

On Sept 2/3rd a mid upper gunner of No.218 squadron bailed-out on route to Karlsruhe after his Stirling was attacked by a E/A. The ORB and Combat Report records this gunner as Sgt S.V Reeves. I cannot find him in "Footprints on the sand of time" by Oliver Clutton-Brook or on the CWG register.

    Any pointers. ?

I've ran as many versions of 218 Sqn for the various commonwealth air forces through Geoff Sullivan;s search engine for men with names starting with R.

Give us a year to look at.

Could he have evaded? Run through Geoff's site yourself but I can't see much.

There were at least three Stanley V Reeves' born between 1913 and 1922, maybe perhaps?

I've checked just those initials for RAAF, RCAF, RNZAF, RAF etc etc

    Hi Rene,

Could be, my old PoW listing in packed away in the loft, I found no S Reeves in FOTSOF by Clutton-Brock, is there a squadron against his name.?

Sadly the 218 ORB seems to overlook the NCO postings In / Out so cannot check his service number.

    Thanks

I thought his number was a few digits short to be an NCo and if you run it through the London Gazette you find a

Gazette Issue 34705 published on the 10 October 1939. Page 8 of 60
The undermentioned Acting Pilot Officers on probation are graded as Pilot Officers on probation with effect from 3rd Sept. 1939, and confirmed in their appointments with effect from 6th Oct. 1939:
    Stanley REEVES (41464)

he was commishioned as early as october 1939 and relinquished his commishion in 1960.

Pop his serevice number into the London Gazette website to check the returns.

    hello Steve,

I had a look yesterday at Kew in the WO344/265/2 file for you.

No REEVE corresponded to 'your' man.

No questionnaire from a S.V. REEVES who was flying with No. 218 Squadron, but some prisoners seemed to have never filed them back in 1945.

The officer previously mentioned in the thread was Stanley REEVES, 41464, from No. 47 Squadron, captured in Crete in 1941.

As far as captured airmen named Reeves are concerned, I noted :
Reginald Ernest, 1317854, from No. 625 Squadron
Reginald John 1611095, from No. 7 Squadron
Reginald Nol 1315318, attached No. 15 Squadron, captured in Rhodes.

Sorry not to have been able to help me.

Have you seen my pm ?

    Hi Joss,

Thank for looking, I was intending to visit the NA this week, currently suffering from man-flu so decided to give it a rest this week.!

Yes, had your pm, and Im currently organising a copy of both.

This is a real mystery regarding Reeves, he is mentioned twice in the ORB, I will keep looking.!!

    Regards
