    Default Unaccounted airman - 29-11-1941 (Canada)

    What caused the death of AC2 Alvin J. HURFORD - RCAF R/123218 (from USA). He served with 3 ITS, Victoriaville, Provence Québec, and lies buried at Evanston, Illinois, USA.

    Suicide

    Killed himself with revolver

    A man who had registered as Sergeant Alvin J. Hurford of the Royal Canadian Air Force committed suicide in his room at the Hotel New Yorker at 9:20 o clock

    "Hurford was dressed in the uniform of an R. C. A. F. sergeant, when, after being questioned about a bill in a hotel, he shot himself with a revolver. "

    Toronto Star, 2 Dec 1941, also has confirmation of this and his training at No. 3. He was from Evanston, Illinois.

    He is not listed on the CWGC database as far as I can see. Perhaps he has been removed or something over the years.
    The Mansfield News Journal , Ohio of Dec 1st stated '..his home was in Evanston Ill but other sources aid he came from Canton, Ohio."

    Census records from 1920 and 1930 would suggest that at least he grew up in Canton.

    He is listed on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial and also on page 33 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance. I've sent a PM to the CWGC.
