    Default 4(SAAF) sqn, LG97 Helwan

    Hello there,
I am seeking anyone with a copy of Brent Winston's Book '85 Years of the South African Air Force'.
If you have it, could you please look up 4 (SAAF) sqn for 16-7-42 at LG97 at Helwan.
That day F/O Harry Clem Hain (USA) VR 100518 was lost MIA in an unknown Kittyhawk.
If you could substanciate the above and add to it I would be very grateful.
    Thank you.

    Hello Roy,

Can't help with an aircraft ID, but the following might be of interest:-

    Casualty Communique No.262.
Of the names in this list 101 are second entries giving later information of casualties published in earlier lists.

    Royal Air Force.

Previously reported missing, now presumed killed in action.

    F/O.H.C.Hain.

    'Flight'. August 5, 1943. p.160.

He is not listed in the book, in any of listings for the various marks of Curtis Tomahawks or Kittyhawks. Nor does there seem to be a loss for 4 Squadron for that date that corresponds with Hain.

    Default 4 (SAAF) sqn F/O H C Hain

    Hello again.
Thanks Col for your help again on this puzzle.
Thanks to you Amrit for checking your copy of '85 Years of the SAAF'.
Another blind alley, but there has to be light at the end of the tunnel somewhere.
    Regards,
    Roy

I nknow CWGC says 4 Sqn (which can't be right and you have assumed 4 Sqn SAAF) but does anyone have RAF War Deaths and the unit in their?

    Default 4 (SAAF) sqn info

    Hello Paul,
Thanks for your reply and suggestion.
About 10-15 years ago James Gray of the Eagle Squadron provided the information to me on F/O Harry Clem Hain (133 sqn) that he was MIA on 4(SAAF) sqn in Libya, on 16-7-42.
I admit it is not clear as the CWG state 4 Sqn.
I am open to any help on this subject.
    Thank you,
    Roy

    Default 4SAAF Losses 16-7-42

    Roy

I've checked the 4SAAF ORB for you and there is no losses that relate to that pilot at all during all three sorties for the day.

Also checked both Tomahawk and Kittyhawk loses for the day and there is no losses to match. If you want I can forward digital copies for you.
