    Default 59, 86 and 224 Squadrons equiped with Liberators : 3rd December 1942

    Hello,

I would like to identify a B-24 Liberator (very probably from RAF) which attacked a Ju 88, on 3rd December 1942, off coasts of Ireland (51 37' 30" North, 10 55' 00" West). This B-24 was slightly damaged but, very probably, could return to its base.

Several Coastal Command squadrons (especially 59, 86 and 224 Sqdn) were equiped with Liberators in December 1942. Possibly (probably ?) the Liberator involved in the air fight against the Ju 88, belonged to one of these Squadrons.

Could anybody give me information about this Liberator : which Squadron ? which markings ? which crew ? which damages ? ...

    Many thanks in advance

    Pierre,
There were more RAF squadrons equipped with Liberators in December 1942 than the three you quote. Another I know of was 120 Squadron, possibly the first Liberator squadron in RAF, which formed up at Nutts Corner from 2 June 1941 with Mark I Liberators, and moved to Ballykelly (N Ireland) in July 1942, and was very heavily involved in the war against the U-boat.

    Default RAF Liberators Squadrons

    Hello David,

Yes, you are right, 120 Squadron was equiped with Liberators in December 1942. But (thanks to Peter Clare for this information) this Sqdn didn't fly missions on 3rd December 1942.

    Pierre
