    Default RCAF P-40Ns in Alaska

    I know I'm grasping at straws here, but would anyone know of any pictures of the US Army P-40Ns with square canopies as turned over to the 111 Squadron RCAF in Alaska while in service in Alaska? (42-105867/RCAF 867 is an example.) The only photos I've found of the square canopy Kittyhawk IVs in RCAF service are after they were stripped to bare metal and used with the Fighter Affiliation Flight of No. 5 Operational Training Unit.

    Default Warhawks

    G'day Jim

    They were actually P-40K-1-CU Warhawks that were used by No. 111 (F) Squadron.
    42-45921, 42-45944, 42-45945, 42-45921, 42-45951, 42-45952, 42-45954, 42-45977, 42-46003 and 42-46004

    The aircraft were used by the squadron from September 1942 to July 1943.

    Cheers...Chris

    Dakota,

    Yes indeed there were P-40Ks, but it appears there were a few P-40Ns as well. (At least a few published sources reference them including John Griffin and Carl Mills.) The problem is that these P-40Ns were not very photogenic so it has been hard to confirm or deny if they were actually in Alaska or not.

    Chris;

    According to Griffin and Kostenuk in "RCAF Squadrons and Aircraft" at least 4 of 111 Squadron's Kittyhawk Mk.IVs were ex USAAF P-40N, purchased in Alaska. The same information is in Griffin's first serial book. According to Baugher, their US serials confirm they were built as P-40N-5-CU.

    861 was ex 42-105839
    862 was ex 42-105840
    867 was ex 42-105867
    870 was ex 42-105878

    RCAF 846 to 880 were all P-40Ns, based on Griffin's first serial book.
