    Default 224 Sqn Loss 29th July 1943

Does anybody have details on the loss of a Liberator V from 224 sqn on 29/7/43. One of the crew on board was named J W I Day. Believed to be operating from St.Eval in to the Bay of Biscay.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Gary,

    Liberator V
    FL965

    Coded A for Apple

    F/Sgt W E Smith
    P/O R G Ballantine
    Sgt W Warrington
    F/O J W I Day
    Sgt R Sumner
    F/Sgt C T W Downing
    F/Sgt G A Briggs
    Sgt H E Richardson
    P/O W P Drew

Op: Musketry 58/2 Patrol, St Eval, Time up 16:05 hrs

Took off for a patrol in the Bay of Biscay. At 20:24 an incomplete message was heard suggesting that a Ju88 had been sighted but nothing more was heard. F/Sgt Smith and his crew are all commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Ross, now we have the aircraft serial number,we were able to find out the following:

    29 July 1943
Ofw. Hans Gryz claimed a Liberator in the late afternoon (20:36) in the area of Pl.Qu. 15 West S/7044. The big four-engined aircraft was shot down into the sea from a height of ten metres. Ofw. Gryzís victim was probably FL965 of 224 Sqdn.

    Hi Gary,

Does the grandson of Fg Off Day have any photographs etc relating to 224 Sqn or his grandfathers logbook?

    Regards,

I'm not sure, I'll ask him when I'm next in work, do you have anything specific in mind?

    Hi Gary,

My Grandfather was a Wop/Ag on 224 Sqn flying in Liberators from St Eval at that time so I am always on the look out for any information/photographs regarding crew, aircraft etc.

    Regards,
    Simon
