Default Unaccounted airmen - 14-12-1941 (Middle East)

    What caused the death of:

F/Sgt (Bombaimer) Cameron A.G. FERGUSON - 43033 (from Canada) - commemorated Column 241 of the Alamein Memorial, and
    F/O (Pilot) Douglas A. SMITH - 42899 (from Canada) - 143 Sqn (sqn.numbering doubtful) - buried Tripoli War Cemetery.

    Hi Henk

Douglas Smith was one of two Beaufighter pilots of 252 Squadron (Smith ex-143 Squadron UK) detached to Malta in early December 1941 (nav/observer Sgt DJ Ashcroft). In the space of five days the crew claimed an SM81 and an SM84 over North Africa, but Smith's aircraft (sans Ashcroft) was shot down by ground fire circa 14 December. He was shot and killed by Italian troops while endeavouring to escape.

According to my records Cameron Ferguson was a crew member of a 14 Squadron Blenheim shot down on 14 December, together with Sgts J.A. Redfern and W.R. Campbell RCAF - all killed, possibly victim of Ltn Neuhoff of III/JG53.

    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Brian

If F/O SMITH indeed was 252 Sqn and flying a Beaufighter, this may have been serial T4868 (SOC 15-12-1941).

Ferguson is listed as KILLED IN ACTION (WHILE FLYINO IN OPERATIONS AGAINST THE ENEMY)., he doesn't have a previous 'missing' listing. So it was known he was killed though missing.

Smith does have a missing listing on January 29th 1942.
