Default S/P John A. Chapin, RCAF

    Hi all,

John Archibald CHAPIN from Brantford, Ontario graduated from No. 2 SFTS (Uplands, Ontario) on December 19th, 1941. By 1942 he was a Sergeant Pilot serving with 401 Squadron (RCAF) in England.

I assume he was later commissioned, since I have a photograph of him wearing an officer's cap.

He must have survived the war.

My question is: where can I find his initial regimental number?

Also, I am looking for a group portrait of his promotion (#39) at No. 2 SFTS.

    Thanks for your help,

    Fox.

Commissioned May 1943 whilst a F/Sgt serving overseas. Name appears in the Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper for 19 May, 1943.

Failing anybody here having the NCO service number you seek the best bet really is the Library and Archives Canada, as mentioned to you on a another forum. While they do have a backlog they will pull up the man's service file and provide you a pro forma with dates and places of enlistment and discharge as well as the service number.

    CHAPIN, John Archibald - R84071 and J17070.

Born 1919. Enlisted in Hamilton, Ontario, 16 December 1940. Posted to No.1 ITS, 23 March 1941. Graduated and promoted LAC, 21 April 1941 when posted to No.10 EFTS. Posted to No.2 SFTS, 25 September 1941. May I not that five months at an EFTS was a very long stretch; he may have been ill for part of the time. Graduated from Mo.2 SFTS, 19 December 1941 when promoted Sergeant. To Embarkation Depot, 20 December 1940. To RAF overseas, 7 January 1942. Commissioned 2 February 1943. Promoted Flying Officer, 2 August 1943. Repatriated to Canada, 14 November 1943. Released 1 May 1944. There are no postings shown between 14 November 1943 and 1 May 1944 - a very long stretch, which I cannot explain. Medical problems before discharge ? Any indication that he had been wounded ?

Hamilton Spectator, 1941/04/29 says: "Seriously injured in motor accident - Chapin, John Archibald, L.A.C., R84071, Brantford, Ont."
