Default Nationality and full name of McConnell, No.14 Squadron

    Hi,

McConnell was air gunner (WOP/AG) in a crew of No.14 Sqn with Pilot Murray MacKenzie, RAF (New Zealander) and Observer M.B. Fearn, RNZAF until MacKenzie was lost 1941.

According to the official history (New Zealanders in the RAF) McConnell had the initials J.N. and he was killed 15 June 1942: “Sergeant J. N. McConnell; born Gisborne, 5 Jan 1921; civil servant; joined RNZAF 22 Dec 1940; killed on air operations 15 Jun 1942.”

This must be wrong because according to Errol Martyn’s For Your Tomorrow Vol3 Jack Nock McConnell was a fighter pilot who was killed on Malta the 15 Jun 42.

I would be grateful for full name and nationality of McConnell.

    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Peter,

An MREU report for the loss of the 14 Sqn aircraft describes the McConnell on board as:

    522840 Sgt McConnell, W. J. - Safe.

    W. J. McConnell was still around in 1994, having contributed an account of the event in the July 1994 (No.20) issue of the 'Journal of the Blenheim Society'. Unfortuantely the editor just introduced him by his surname (as McConell - just the one 'n') and initials.
