    Default POW escapees? Reay

Hi guys, was wondering if anybody has access to any records that could help me trace possible ancestors who were POW's.

    There details were :

    1475922 F/Sgt T A Reay POW no 43101, Camp 357 (Kopernikus Thorn?)

    1541851 W/O W E Reay POW no 1160, Camp L4

If anybody has access to these records I would be extremey grateful if you could help me find out what happened to these guys. Family legend says that one of my ancesotrs (possibly these two mentioned) escaped from a POW camp. Wouls be interested to know where these men served and from what part of England (if England) they were from.

    Matt :)

    Hi Matt
It would appear that both the men you list survived the war.
There are however a further 13 Airmen on the CWGC list with the same surname.

    Default Reay escapees

Hi Chaps and ladies (haven't forgotten you Linzee etc)

Having directed Matt to this site, I think he is after knowing whether any of you have a copy of an PoW/Escape & Evasion report for either of these Reays or whether in actual fact anyone knows whether they might have made a successful escape, or any escape attempt at all. Presumably the info, if it survives, will be at the NA.
Also a Squadron for either or both of these would help - I long ago gave up trying to search the LG - so for those experts that know how to do a decent search that doesn't take about 3 days (Terry and others?) any info on these Reays would be appreciated by Matt.
Quite a nice uncommon surname, so hopefully someone might have either or both of these in their files.
Another point is that in Ross's PoW list it gives 1541851 W/O W E Reay POW no 1160, at Camp L4, L4 is given as Sagan Belaria but it appears that Luft 4 was at Tychowo, Poland - can anyone explain that discrepancy?

Nearly New Year so I'll be the first to wish a Happy New Year to all.

    Reayman, Hi,
Looks like both yr guys Enlisted at Padgate, Lancahsire, in Apr 1941.
Only searched Births 1920-1923 but there are 3 possibles

Thomas A Reay birth Registered Gateshead Q3 1920 (Ref Vol 10a Page 2399) - Mother's Maiden Surname Walker
Walter E Reay Reg South Shields Q4 1921 (Ref Vol 10a Page 1837) - MMS Smith
Thomas A Reay Reg Sunderland Q1 1923 (Ref Vol 10a Page 1311) - MMS Appleton

Seems like these guys (and a lot of other Reay's!!) were from Tyneside/Wearside.
    Over to the genealogists!!

It maybe worth contacting the site for more details

    Default Reay

    Hi Chaps,

Thanks a lot, that should help Matt out. Normally I would do some of the genealogical stuff, however, due to finances being rather tight I am not subscribed to Ancestry as previously so can't look up the BMDs easily. I'm sure that Matt should be able to check those out though.
Ta for all the info, I noted that T A Reay flew mainly with a Canadian crew so it is possible that there would be more info available in Canada, (from the personnel files of deceased airmen on that last flight), should that Reay be a relation, if Matt was interested.

Anyway, as usual, this site has turned up trumps again.

    All the best,

    Ann

    Default Luft IV

    Hi Ann,

I have come across the same mystery.

I have an RCAF POW whose service file says he was at Luft IV. But when I look closer I see he was at the "Luft III overflow camp at Belaria". In fact, most POW literature I have seen just calls Belaria the "overflow camp" of Luft III.

I have also seen aerial photos of both Luft III and Belaria and they were both at Sagan.

Does anybody know what Belaria's "official" German title was?

    Many thanks in advance.

Best of the New Year to everyone.

    Dave

The Belaria camp was, I think, Stalag VIIIC.

    Default Belaria and Sagan

    Hi Amrit,

Belaria was definitely part of Stalag Luft 3, a separate compound. Look here:

    http://www.axpow.org/stories-belaria.htm

What I can't understand is was Reay in Sagan or was he in Luft 4?

    Regards,

    Ann
