Default NZ391852 - Valid RNZAF Number?

Is NZ391852 a valid RNZAF service number? I thought they were in the range 4xxxxx.

    hello,

The New-Zealand members of the board will reply for sure, but I understood the first two digit were the year of enlistment (as for the R.A.A.F.), hence 41xxxx, 42xxxx. So 39xxxx would mean an enlistment in 1939.

Errol Martyn wrote a chapter about service numbers in his volume 3 of "For your Tomorrow", explaining that airmen of the RNZAF were not alloted numbers until september 1938, and direct entry officersnot until September 1941. Number for airmen enlisting immediatly after the outbreak of war bore a letter 'A' prefix, while pre-war regulars normally retained their original non-prefixed number.

    Hope this is clear enough...

What's the ID of your airman ?
