    Hi All

    GATES, GEOFFREY GEORGE Flight Lieutenant 126651 was lost on 18 Nov 1944 with 86 Sqn, does anyone know what the circumstances were?

    Liberator BZ943 was lost on a training exercise. Members with the Air-Britain Liberator book may have more details and crew

    Hi Malcolm,

    According to RAF Aircraft BA100 - BZ999 Air Britain, Liberator V BZ943 with 86 Sq who at that time were at Oakington, crashed in the sea on a training exercise on 18.11.44. So this is one possibility as your man is on Runnymede Memorial.

    Many thanks for your replies. He is indeed on Runnymede. His fate was requested by a relative of a u-boat crewman in German (U-865), which Gates attacked on 27 Jul 1944.

    there appear to be a few more RAAF names associated with the loss:

    PECK, Reginald John - (Warrant Officer); Service Number - 420786
    NOBLE, Ian Richard Steele - (Warrant Officer); Service Number - 422349;
    MELLON, John - (Warrant Officer); Service Number - 421368
    KILPATRICK, George - (Flight Sergeant); Service Number - 433109
    HOUGH, Gordon Fairfax - (Warrant Officer); Service Number - 420389
    PORDACE, Harry - (Pilot Officer); Service Number - 414079

    All have BZ943 linked to their casualty repatriation files in NAA.

    AUS433109 F/Sgt. George KILPATRICK RAAF, lost on 24-4-45 aboard No.218 Squadron Lancaster I NF955.

    Others aboard BZ943, confirmed in A705 (NAA: A705 166/32/564 p.41 0f 41), of AUS420786 Reginald John PECK RAAF.
