Flt Lt NORMAN DOUGLAS LANCASTER 40397.

Chris Shores' et al , in Bloody Shambles Vol.1, records the following:-

    Thursday, 1 January (1942)

On the morning of New Year's Day two Blenheim Is of 62 Squadron set off from Kluang to attack these craft. Warnings were issued to the crews of the presence of Japanese fighters, but both L8440 flown by Flg Off G W Haigh and L1414 piloted by Flt Lt N D Lancaster, failed to return. The 3rd Flying Battalion reported that its pilots - from the 59th Sentai - shot down two Blenheims and a Glenn Martin while escorting motor launches operating on the Bernam River.

    See:
    Bloody Shambles Volume 1.
    Shores,C.,Cull,B. & Y.Izawa.
    London:Grub Street,1992.
    p.279.

Warner, in The Bristol Blenheim (1st ed.) p.546, suggests that Blenheim L1414 may have been lost, with 34 Sqn. on 20-1-42.

Whatever, it looks as if the CWGC is in error on Lancaster's date of death.

More work needed on this one.

    Thanks Col

A-B Serials simply record 'lost in Malaya 1.42' for L1414, but confirms 34 Sqn.

As you say more research needed.

The August 1940 Air Force List only shows him as Plt Off and with no active operations in the area between Aug 1940 and Jan 1941, I suspect he did not get promoted to Fg Off and then Flt Lt in four months so 1942 looks more likely.

    Hi Malcolm,

No.62 Squadron casualties for 1-1-42 were:-

    AUS401029 P/O.Eric CROMPTON RAAF
561056 F/Sgt John Walker Coutts BOWIE
    81335 F/O.Geoffrey William HAIGH
    40397 F/Lt. Norman Douglas LANCASTER.
    80560 F/O.Frank MARTIN
    536352 F/Sgt.William Watson MARTIN

We have Haigh and Lancaster as pilots, now need to sort out the crews.

Crompton's Grave Registration Form, gives his aircraft as Blenheim I L8440 (See; NAA: A8234 122 pp.1-2).

    Hi Malcolm,

Came across this thread will checking Singapore casualties, you might be interested to know the London Gazette 37744 page 4904 1/10/1946 shows both F/L Lancaster & F/O Haigh as being awarded Mention in Despatches for service in Malaya 1942.

I presume the late date of the awards was probably due to information supplied by returning P.O.Ws ?

I have just notice an error in my original request, the date should of course been 1 Jan 1942 not 1941.
