    Default 420117 - Unaccounted airmen - 17-1-1942 (Algeria)

    Looking for the aircraft type and serial number of the following crew of 59 Sqn, killed 17-1-1942 and all buried in the Bne War Cemetery, Algeria:
    P/O (Pilot) Leslie E. COOK - 627700;
    P/O (Obs) Alexander C. ARGENT - 65518 (see note re his svcnr);
    Sgt (WOp) Herbert G. LUNAN - 631284, and
    F/Sgt (Ag) Richard COLLINS - 625932.
    The aircraft may have been een Lockheed Hudson but can't find a matching serial number.
    Note:
    Also problems with the svcnr 65518 of P/O Argent as LAC (Ag u/t) David N. JONES, who was killed 14-8-1942 and lies buried at Picton, Ontario, Canada, has same svcnr on CWGC website.
    Regards and thanks for your help.
    Henk.

    GRO RAF llist gives Jones Serial Number as 655518, the unit is listed as 31 ??? School,

    I can't read the three letters but it should be obvious. The letters look some thing like F ? G. My brain just won't engage this early in the morning.

    Henk,

    Looks like a bit of misinformation in, 'Malta:The Spitfire Year".

    Friday, 16 January (1942).

    On the same day (16/17 Jan), another Hudson en route to to the Far East was lost when AE491 (of 1 OADU), was forced to ditch in the Mediterranean; on this occasion Plt Off L. E. Cook's 59 squadron crew survived .

    See:
    Malta:The Spitfire Year 1942.
    Shores,C, Cull,B & N.Malizia
    London:Grub Street,1991.
    p.43

    There is also; 1006964 AC1 Joseph MONRO RAFVR , buried in Bone War Cemetery (II.E.2). He could have been on board OADU Wellington IC Z9030, lost on 16/17-1-1942, then again, he just might have been accompanying Cook in AE491.

    GRO Deaths, would confirm it , one way or the other. Z9030 - 15 OTU or, AE491 - 59 Sqn/OADU.

    LAC Joseph Monro is simply listed as OAD
    If you have some more of the OADu 15 OTU mens names I'll check them.

    Cook, Argent and Lunan are lsited as 59 Sqn while Collins is listed as 23 OTU.

    Took off Gibraltar for Luqa. Hit a hillside in a storm, 850 km W of Bone. The dead are buried in Bone War Cemetery. Sgt Bellamy, in the rear turret, survived, and was interned until November 1942

    Although needing confirmation, It would appear as if Monro was on board Hudson AE491.

    Dennis, thanks for the Z9030 crew GRO status.

    Assume the info by Shores/Cull/Malizia in their "Malta: The Spiifire Year 1942" on page 43 is incorrect. If COOK and his crew survived their ditch then something must have happened after their rescue. I believe that all five airmen of 59 Sqn were on OADU Hudson AE491.
    Regards,
    Henk.
