Default Beaufighter serials 254 Squadron and external appearance

    Dear all,

On 17th January 1945 the North Coates Wing (236 and 254 Sqdn) attacked a convoy in the Marsdiep between Den Helder and Texel, The Netherlands.

The ORB of 254 Squadron only mentions individual letters, no serials. The next Beaufighters carried out this mission:

    QM-H
    QM-S
    QM-A RD140
    QM-C
    QM-Z
    QM-F NE465
    QM-K
    QM-O NV153
    QM-Q
    QM-T NV187
    QM-V
    QM-W
    QM-X
    QM-Y
    QM-P
    QM-R

I've managed to match some serials with the individual letter, but hope some visitors of this Board can add more serials.

The external appearance of these TF M.X's also raise some question marks. I've seen mk.X's both with normal nose and normal dorsal fin and the thimble nose radome and dorsal fin extension in several books. From which serial block exactly was this modification used?

Apart from that illustrations of these late period Beau's suggest a thin white band around the tail fuselage, but I've also noticed a thin red and white band. What was the purpose of this band?

Thanks in advance for your effort and best regards,
    Hans Nauta

Default Beaus Mk. X of No 254 Sq

    Dear Hans,

unfortunately I have no such information for you but I have searched the RAF serials for serials you already have and look for 254 Sq so here is the list of "possible candidates" :-)

! - I suppose this plane was at unit on 17.1.45 as it was lost with 254 Sq very soon afterwards
? - I am not so sure if this plane can be at the unit on 17.1.45

    Hello Pavel,

Thanks a lot for your tremendous contribution! At least I've something to work with. It will be now a matter of crosslinking.

    Best regards,
    Hans Nauta
