    Default Spitfire Code Letter

Can anyone assist. I have a poor quality photograph of a Spitfire carrying a single bomb in flight. The serial letters are X between the roundal followed by letter U. The only connection I have is probable circa Malta 1943 period.

I have the obvious books but unable to find reference to the two single letters displayed between the British Roundal. Quality impossible for the searial number of the aircraft.

    Any thought please, thank you.

    Hi Colin,

229 Sqn used the squadron code "X-x" ie X-U, and was based at Malta in 1943.

    Best Regards
