Default Officers in the RAFO and RAFVR

Can anyone explain the difference between officers in the Reserve of Air Force Officers (RAFO) and Officers in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR), is it merely that the RAFO pre dates the RAFVR?

    Hi Andy

There were/are various classes of RAFO - details are given on my website at http://www.rafweb.org/Reserve_2.htm

During WW2 there are many notices in the LG stating that officers had completed their short service commissions and were transferred to the reserve, immediately being recalled for continued service.

The RAFVR was set up in 1937 as a means of expanding the RAF in peacetime and allowed the recruitment of personnel of non-commissioned status with some being commissioned on completion of their training. Shortly after the outbreak of war recruitment into the RAF was effectively curtailed with all new recruits being placed in the RAFVR, however, there were some exceptions, but relatively few.
