    Default P/O James C Campbell RAF (41345)

Hi, is anyone able to say how the above airman lost his life on 7th November 1939. Having tried searching Henk's posts I dont think that this has been covered already.

I believe he was also the pilot of Skua L3026 which crashed at Brough, Yorkshire on 10th September 1939.

    regards Rich Allenby

    Hi Rich

I have him being killed flying (in) Wallace, K6028 of No 1 Air Observer School whilst it was being ferried to No 9 AOS when it flew into high ground in bad visibility at Benachie near Aberdeen. He was with Plt Off G H H Coates.

Malcolm, very many thanks. I thought his loss must be recorded as Henk had not covered it.

Much appreciated as ever, regards Rich

The Wallace on Benachie crashed on the 3rd September 1939, two full months before Campbell's death.

I have P/O E.A. Cummings and LAC A.R.R. Stewart as the crew of the Wallace, that was from an older thread on here, possibly even the old forum.

My apologies, on checking I had inadvertantly looked at the 'Struck off Charge' date in the 'K Files' instead of the accident date when linking casualties to incidents.

Hi Malcolm, i just need to point out that G H H Coates was not actually on the Wallace. He was killed in an Oxford from 11 FTS Shawbury when the aircraft crashed into the Wrekin (a local hill).

Don't have the serial to hand, but he was killed and the other occupant was thrown clear and survived.

    Cheers, Tom

    Gents,
The 11 FTS Oxford was P1845. I've an unconfirmed source that he probably was killed on a ferry flight of 1 FPP flying Hart Special K4439; flew into high ground Rabbitt Hill, Ewelme Park, NE of Benson. Perhaps the place of death registration may solve this problem.
    Regards,
    Henk.

I don't have access to Scottish deaths, but there is a James C Campbell aged 23 registered in Henley, but not sure if that would cover Rabbit Hill?

I haven't checked Coates but he will certainly be registered under Wellington and if i remember right he was only 18.

    Cheers, Tom
