David,
RCAF casualty list issued 24 March 1944:
Missing after air operations - W.O. Wilfred Harold Eugene OSTLUND, Midale, Saskatchewan.
WO2 W.H.E. Ostlund, RCAF J/85820 was the sole survivor the crash of Halifax LK974, shot down near Stendal, Germany on 20 Feb 1944. He was interned in Camps L6/357, PoW No.2856.
Can anyone tell me more about him? His first names? When released?
I have the crew details and info on the crash.
Thanks.
David

Great, thanks Ken. I will see if I can trace his history since then.

David,
He died last December in Saskatchewan, age 95. Last Post notice:

Thanks Ken, you beat me to it. I was searching through the death notices etc. and hadn't thought to try that one yet. Odd that his service number doesn't match though. He was already a W/O when he went missing, so it shouldn't have changed, should it?

David,
I don't know what, if any, service record the Legion would consult when posting their death notices. Possiby they had both of his numbers on file and chose to use his original service number.
Thanks Ken. I found his obit in the local paper, the Leader-Post.

Hello,
The Regina Leader Post has the same photo published in their 1 March and 9 June 1944 editions.
The June one is better. If you have an email address listed on your profile I will send it to you.
Regards,
Dave
