    Default Catalina FP247 crash 15Mar45

    Russ,

On 15 March, 1945, Catalina FP247, V/209, was returning to Mombasa from a courier run to Seychelles, Adda Atoll and Koggala (Ceylon) when, just after becoming airborne at Seychelles, it was struck by a sudden gust of wind lifting the stbd wing and swinging the plane to port. Despite full application of stbd. rudder the plane still swung to port and headed straight for high land while not gaining altitude. Realizing that he would be unable turn in time to avoid cliffs ahead due to the plane's low speed, the pilot, W/O G. Kirkland) deliberately stalled the plane onto the water from 30', tearing a large hole in the hull’s bottom when striking a coral reef. The aircraft immediately settled on the reef with three feet of water inside. There were no casualties, but the aircraft was a write-off. It was subsequently floated to the slipway and dismantled.
