Don Tolkowsky, a Palestinian served with 94 squadron during 1944 - 45 and later headed the Israeli Air Force, but what of his earlier RAF service and background - can any one help with his training and other squadrons ?

    Ian,
There's a pic of him on the main IAF site. Sgt Pilot who did FTS in Rhodesia. Can't be too many RAF Sgt Pilots who invented, and then Commanded, an entire Country's Air Force!!

Default Don Tolkowsky / Dan Tolkovsky

Since placing my request for help the following detail has come to light,
It appears that Don Tolkowsky is actually Dan Tolkovsky (as per IAF data), but is certainly remembered as the former by his ex 94 squadron friends.
In 1943 a group of Jews from British Mandatory Palestine were sent to the pilot course at the RAF's flight school in Rhodesia. The first to finish the course was Dan Tolkovsky, who was assigned to fly as a fighter pilot at first, and then served in a reconnaissance squadron of the RAF Command in Greece.
In November 1947 Freddy Fredkins, aided by Dan Tolkovsky, begins purchase activities on behalf of Sherut Ha'avir (forerunner of IAF)
On May 17, 1953 Col. Dan Tolkovsky is appointed to temporarily take the place of IAF Commander Gen. Hayim Laskov, who is abroad on a prolonged study mission, but Tolkovsky continues as Commander until July 1958.

Any other RAF details still welcome.

    Thanks again, Ian
