    Default 12th July 1941, Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetary.

    Whilst searching for my members of 56 Course, 2SFTS, l find that two of them died on 12th July 1941 and are buried in Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta. They are Sgt. E O Townsend and Sgt. D D P Thomas

    I have no squadron for these guys but there a number of deaths recorded on this day without squadron. Does this date have an significance and can anyone tell me anymore about what happened to these guys.

    Regards,

    Nick

    Hello Nick,
    Wellington I.C Z8775 of OADF took off Luqa on ferry to Egypt. Raised flaps too early and crashed near Safi. Also killed:
    Sgt Lionel F. CLAY - 914496;
    Sgt Arthur J. WORSFIELD - 924678;
    Sgt William J.Q. RAMSAY - 1002037, and
    Sgt Ralph W. ASKIN - NZ40957.
    Sources: BCLME (Gunby/Temple) vol.1 page 73 and 'For Your Tomorrow' (Martyn) vol.1 page 131.

    Henk.

    Hi Henk,

    The two chaps l mentioned were both pilots, were they being ferried or ferrying the plane. Do we know which squadron they belonged to?

    Hello Nick,

    I have checked the "GRO" Micro-film. Both did belong to 15 OTU.

    Sgt Eugene O. Townsend - 1001442 - 15 OTU
    Sgt Desmond D.P. Thomas - 929865 - 15 OTU

    Think you have the final answer here concerning their duty with 15 OTU:

    Thanks Finn,

    These two guys trained with my Father on 56 Course, 2SFTS, and this is the second time that l have found two members of the same course dying on the same raid or operation.

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    Nick

    Nick,

    I don't believe that the GRO unit reference is up to date. On departing 15OTU in the UK for the ME the crew and aircraft would have come under the control of the Overseas Air Deliveries Flight (OADF).
