    Default Charles Henry Fletcher

I would like information on Charles Henry Fletcher, my grandfather's half-brother. He was born in 1909 in Birmingham. His marriage cert in 1933 gives his occupation as Royal Air Force Airman. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
This may not be the man you are looking for but there are similarities that may tie in with other details you already have.
    FLETCHER, CHARLES HAROLD
    Initials: C H
    Nationality: United Kingdom
    Rank: Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
    Unit Text: 405 (R.C.A.F.) Sqdn
    Age: 29
    Date of Death: 18/09/1941
    Service No: 1165250
Additional information: Husband of Noeline Lillian Fletcher, of Bulwell, Nottingham.
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
    Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. D/22. Grave 28.
    Cemetery: NOTTINGHAM NORTHERN CEMETERY
This man died on a Wellington,W5492, LQ-K, which crashed on an Air Test near Pocklington, Yorkshire after a Dinghy broke loose from it's stowage and fouled the elevators
The age is close and it could be that he left the airforce after 1933 and re-enlisted near the outbreak of war as he is RAFVR and not RAF on the CWGC site where the information came from together with Bomber Command Losses Vol 2 by W R Chorley. The Wife's name will probably tell you if he is "your" man or not as there is a difference in Middle name so it may be that you eliminate this one from your search.
All the best with the search anyway
    Regards
    Dick

    Hi
Col and Andy have found a closer match for the name than I did but on CWGC his age is given as 30, where, born in 1909, it should be closer to 36 and CWGC have nothing about a wife in their Additional Information. Neither difference is neccessarily a barrier to his being your man as CWGC info is sometimes incomplete and was often added at the time their records were digitised. It is very common, as an example,to find that on CWGC the age is simply"Unknown"
The 2nd Edition of "The Bristol Blenheim" by Graham Warner has the same details as the first
    Good Luck in the search

    Thanks everyone for their help,
Unfortunately no-one given is an exact match. My Charles Henry Fletcher was the son of Charles Fletcher, a railway drayman and his wife Kate Florence. His wife's name was Doris Nellie. I have the name of two sons and a daughter. The youngest was born in 1942.
It is possible that he survived the war.

Two Doris Nellie Fletcher are listed as died since 1984 on the electronic register.

Doris Nellie Fletcher 11 Jun 1902 May 1986 83 Camberwell London
Doris Nellie Fletcher 30 Dec 1911 Oct 2003 91 Bromsgrove Worcestershire

From what you say, C H Fetcher married Doris Nellie in 1933, registered Q3 1933, Charles H Fetcher marries Doris N Groves in Birmingham district.

The later must be your mans wife, as I find the only Doris N Groves registered was in Q1 of 1912 in Birmingham district. her being born late in 1911, registered in 1912.

I dont find a Charles H or Henry Fletcher died in England or Wales during 1984 to 2005 on ancestry.com.

Have you acess to ancetry.com or similar, have you trawled back from 1982 in the death indexes? Painful I know but who knows.

A Charles Henry Fletcher born 29 Nov 1908 was registered died in Q2 1980 in the Birmingham district, Vol. 32 Page 0480

His birth was registered well into 1909 so I don;t think this is him but can you consider it?

Thank you. That seems like him. I do have access to ancestry.co.uk but is painful like you say searching the indexes before 1984 that are not covered in free bmd. I discovered him first in the 1911 census.

I think my family don't know much about his family as my grandfather (who was 19 years older than Charles Henry) left home to join the Royal Field Artillery when his father Charles married secondly to a much younger woman in 1907.
    Thanks everyone for their help,
    Fletcher

I checked all the way back to Q1 1975 this evening so thats good chunk taken out. Try another 10 years maybe, and get Doris's death cert, it might help.
