What were the places of death registration for:

A - Died on active service:
AC2 Thomas HILTON - 1535907, and
AC2 Ernest S. OGBOURNE - 1472635.

B - Presumed killed in action:
Sgt Keith T. NAYLOR - 536822.

C - Proposed aircraft loss for this day:
Beaufighter I.C - T3231 - 2 (C)OTU - crashed on approach Catfoss (already as a casualty on this a/c: Sgt M.M. HURLEY - RCAF R/64892).

Ogbourne didn't come up on the register

As far as I'm aware York was never in East Yorkshire. The boundaries of the East, West and North Ridings all stopped at the York city boundary which was a seperate authority.

An Ernest Stanley Ogbourne is registered born:
Ernest Stanley Ogbourne 1901 Jul-Aug-Sep Edmonton Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex
Making him 41 or so years old. He does not seem to turn up in Scotland deaths.

Another Ernest S Ogbourne can be found in 1916 but died at birth.

Hi Dennis and Malcolm
Both Malcolm and the ukbmd site are correct, I have no doubt that Malcolm is right about the way Yorkshire, and within it York itself, were administered. The problem with the registration of Births,Marriages and Deaths is that the offices were not strictly confined to the County Boundaries and the ukbmd site reflects this and in the case of York reflects the communities that report through York from outside the city, up to 1946 on to the E Riding Authority and then from 1946 the W Riding. I suspect that in 1837 when the system was introduced it was based on Parishes and Towns and not Counties and the underlying organisation has remained largely unchanged. A recent example for Henk was the Barrow Office which was in Lancashire in WW2 but included places like Coniston and Hawkshead across the border in Westmorland. It is probably all in Cumbria now!! Treading through that sort of minefield doesn't half delay the onset of Senile Decay

I have Hurley as flying solo in Beaufighter T3231 and it crashing when coming too slow for a landing after engine failure. On his 1st solo.
