    Default Air Force List 1919

I'm trying to determine to which unit Lt J H Shaw was attached during the period Feb-May 1919. I suspect he was on the strength of 166 Sqn at Bircham Newton at the time, but would appreciate confirmation (or otherwise) if anyone has a copy of the appropriate AFL.

    TIA

    Brian,

There are two J H Shaw names in the Feb 1919 AFL:

    Shaw, J H (landplane pilot, 2nd Lt/Hon Lt 5 Apr 18)
Shaw, John Hudson (landplane pilot, 2nd Lt 29 Sep 18)
First names are not normally given in these early AFLs, except when duplicate surname/initials appear, though in this case the given names of only one of the twosome are provided.

You won't find units listed in the AFLs of WWI or 1919. If Shaw left the RAF within a year or so of 1919 you should find a service record of sorts for him in on AIR76 microfilm at the TNA (Reel 457 Sharples, Albert - Shaw, Leonard).

    Hi All

Just to back up what Errol said, the first AFL to show postings for anything other than the Air Ministry and Commands was April 1920, but most of the overseas units are listed without staffing lists. They were shown the fdollowing month.
