    Default B D Larner

I am trying to trace BD Larner who I believe was in the R.A.F in 1933.
I have a photograph of him with colleagues Perry, Ovenden, Blackburn and Donaldson. On the back of the photograph it says Five would be pilots. I believe the photograph was taken in Egypt or Iraq and is dated November 1933.
The Perry referred to is is Sgt Pilot Charles D Perry who was a member of 103 Squadron and who died in 1940. I don't know any more about Ovenden, Blackburn and Donaldson.
    Any help gratefully received.

Best fitting name from the FreeBMD site is

    Births Jun 1910
LARNER Bertram Dudley Norwich 4b 112

    Would seem to have died:
Bertram Dudley Larner b.12 Apr 1910 d.Mar 1986 age 75 District: Worthing West Sussex

    UK Shipping records show a:
Bertram Larner age 26, RAF member, arrived on 24th July 1936 on the SS Cathay in Plymouth. His last place of residence is given as Aden. His proposed address is one in North Kensington.

    Hi Donut

366132 Sgt. Bertram Dudley Larner is one of 'mine', and my data agrees with the information Dennis has provided you. The following from my (brief) bio of him:

    b. 12 Apr 1910
41 Sqn, 9 May 1934 (travelled to Aden with 41 Sqn in Oct 1935 due to the Abyssinian Crisis)
emb. Aden for UK, 9 Jul 1936 (this is a month ahead of the rest of the Sqn, and fits neatly witht he arrival date given by Dennis)
WO, 1 Feb 1942 (year may be erroneous)
com. Fg Off from WO, 11 Jun 1953
    Flt Lt, 11 Jun 1956
    retired, 12 Apr 1965

I would like to hear more about your interest in Larner and about the photograph you have. Please contact me off board at brewATclientsDOTch

    Thanks

    Steve,

"WO, 1 Feb 1942 (year may be erroneous)"

Larner appears in column 7143 of the Oct 1946 AFL under date of 1 Feb 42. Curiously, in the index his column is recorded as 7172 whose dates range from 1 to 30 Oct 43.

    Thanks for the look-up Errol

I couldn't remember why I had an issue with the date as my bio just includes a note that it needs to be checked. Your post confirms there is indeed some form of inconsistency.

I also thought it was odd that Larner 'jumped' a rank when he was commissioned - from WO to Fg Off. Was this common? I've not seen it before.

    Cheers

    Steve,

During the last war it was relatively common for Warrant Officers to commission into the Technical Branch with the rank of Fg Off. Looking through my records I can see a number of Warrant Officers who did this.
