    Nick,
Yr man Troughear seems to have Enlisted at either Cardington or Padgate in Sept 1939. By late 1943 he has risen to the dizzy heights of LAC in the RAF Regt.
The Dodecanese Is lie between Turkey and Greece. Various (mostly unsuccessful) attempts were made to recapture them. It would have shortened the re-supply line to the USSR and might have made Turkey abandon neutrality and come into WW2 on the side of the Allies (which would have pleased Joe Stalin). However, the usual (at that time) lack of proper Forces and - more importantly - an almost total lack of the ability to Command and control a tri-Service amphibious Force led to a series of failures (a problem not really solved until Op CORPORATE - and I include OVERLORD!).
