Concerning 1077610 AC1 Spence and 1191636 AC1 Howard, both were serving with No2 Mobile Balloon Unit Kidbrooke London. Both were killed on the Isle of Sheppey near Sheerness while trying to recover unexploded bombs / mines as part of a bizarre operation called Operation Petard (as in hoist by one's own). This involved sending unmanned balloons with bombs / mines suspended on wires below the balloons out over the English Channel at Night, with the aim of snaring German mine-laying aircraft. The idea was that the enemy aircraft would fly into the wires setting off the explosives and effectively blowing themselves up. This plan went wrong on a number of occasions but most spectacularly on the night of 31st March 1942 when a large number of Balloons and their suspended ordinance ended up on the Isle of Sheppey. Over 100 men from No2 MBU were tasked with disarming and recovering the explosives. The clean up operation extended over 1st / 2nd April 1942 and in addition to the two airman an ARP warden and a young boy were also killed.
