    Default Searching For Remains

Could anyone please tell me if any efforts have been undertaken to search for downed planes around the Friesian Isles? The plane that my brother was piloting, Wellington HF596 AS-A CREW was shot down while on a 'Gardening Operation' August 15/16 1943 My brother Flt Sgt ALBERT PETER BATES,1066641 along with his crew were all killed.

Any help or information would be most appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Chris.
I am familiar with David Swallows site, and have tried to contact him to no avail. I wanted to post of photo of my brother on his site.

I also didn't have any luck finding the RAF Commands link that you mentioned.

I appreciate your efforts. Thank you.

    Hi Margaret,
if you copy & past the link into your search engine it should work, (my error it is not a RAF commands link but a Luftwaffe link)

    Hi Margaret,

Over the years many planes are recovered in the Netherlands but most of the recoveries were on land or near the coast.Looking in Nachtjagd War Diaries from Theo Boiten it says that the plane came down in the North Sea 60 km. NW of Vlieland so I am afraid this plane and the brave men within it was lost without trace for ever. However I am not sure.
I expect there are members from the Netherlands on this forum who can tell you something more about the plane recoveries.

    kind regards

    Mike

    Margaret,

I am in a similar position to you as my uncle's plane was lost on approach to Brest Harbour in 1944, also on a gardening mission.

The other possibility is that the bodies of the crew were washed up some time after the plane went down and that they were buried as "unknown". I will send you an email separately later today, directing you to some more information about this.

    Hi Chris,
Try as I will I cannot bring up that site. I can bring up the luftwafft site but can't for the life of me find that thread.
