    Henk,

Re: Tiger Moth II T7298, and Hurricane I V6843.

On the afternoon of the 15th April, 1942, Pilot Officer Edmund Ray Taylor (J/7419) RCAF, of the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit, took off at 1510 hours in Hawker Hurricane V6843 to carry out an air test prior to embarkation. When over the River Dee his aircraft collided in mid-air , between 6,000 and 8,000 feet, with a DeHavilland Tiger Moth T7298 from No.24 Elementary Flying Training School, and was seen to turn on its back and dive vertically down, crashing into the River near Parkgate at 1520 hours. The pilot of the Tiger Moth , Leading Airman Barnby, of the Fleet Air Arm was also fatally injured.

CAN J/7149 P/O (Pilot) Edmund Ray TAYLOR RCAF +
    Buried Liverpool (Kirkdale) Cemetery.

    FAA/FX.89365 L/Airman Richard Vivian BARNBY FAA +
    Commemorated on the Lee-on-Solent Memorial.

The RNLI entry for the Dee crash is recorded as a no service:

    APRIL 15TH. - HOYLAKE, CHESHIRE.
It had been reported that an R.A.F. pilot was in a rubber dinghy in the Dee Estuary, but nothing was found. - Rewards, 18 18s.

KILLED ON ACTIVE SERVICE.- Sqn. Ldr. H. Baker; Flight mag July 9th 1942

There are no John C Cowan's turning up in Scotland, the only thing on 2712 Sqn I can find is they were formed at Ballyherbert? is this ballyhallbert in Norhtern Ireland. They moved to Mildenhall in 1942. No date given, so perhaps he died in Northern Ireland.

    Hi Henk,

Form 1180 confirms Baker as pilot of W8725 but lists 2 killed so you are looking for another fatality.

I coudl only suggest the following, Baker is on the register Vol 7b pg 153,

the ages of everyone on pages 152-154 besides him are 87, 74, 91, 69, 76, 85 etc etc

with the exception of one Cyril H Sands aged 46 which matches up to

Lt Col Cyril Harry SANDS 44656 ROAC up for a joy ride perhaps?
