    Default Ballon Command losses

    Hello ,

On september 16 1942 the body's off LAC MacKinnon WR , McKinnon H and Prior LH from Ballon Command washed ashore on the Belgium coast between Oostduinkerken and Nieuwpoort. They were buried at the Oostduinkerke Communal cemetery. Does someone can help me with info on this loss.

    Regards

    Alain12, Hi,

These might possibly be casualties from the Dieppe raid on 19 Aug 42. Dieppe to Nieuwpoort is about 110 nm. Time 28 days. Average distance covered per day is about 4 nm (although they would have washed back and forward each day with the tides) – seems reasonable? But you might have to get some hydrographers on the case!!

No need to get the Hydroggies on the case, just the IT search engine

    Hello Alain and All

If the names are connected with the raiding parties, known as the 'Dieppe Raid' there is a mention in Stephen Roskill's book of the raid, see my post 27 regarding Roskill's book ...

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...escue-launches

Stephen Roskill (Capt S. W. Roskill) was on the Naval Staff during part of the war and wrote his own accounts "The Navy at War 1939-1945" (Collins 1960) pages noted in the links above. Roskill also wrote other books and the official HMSO Volumes "The War at Sea" Official History 1954, which is like the Navy equivalent to Webster and Frankland, although Roskill also saw documents and heard of events at the time.

Roskill mentions the RAF in his works and some of his papers are at the Churchill College Archives, Cambridge.

    Regards Mark
