    Malcolm,
Shot down over Western Desert and believed to have crashed near Abu Dwells, possibly by OBFW Friedel of JG27, death presumed to have been 20.09.42.

    Many thanks Alan

Does this mean CWGC has the wrong date?

    Malcolm,
Someone will correct me if i'm wrong but, it's possible that he took off on 20/09/42 for whatever sortie he was on, was shot down, but because no body was recovered, theres no telling when he died, he could have survived being shot down, only to die from other causes. Hence date presumed 20th.

    Hello AlanW/Malcolm,

    20-9-1942

...33 Squadron took off to escort Tac.R. Hurricane of 208 Squadron...

33 Squadron saw little flak and few enemy fighters, but Flt. Lt. A.P.V.Strachen [sic] of 208 Squadron, flying a Hurricane 2C borrowed from 33, and was seen to break away below after flying through some heavy flak, and did not return. Four Bf109s of III./JG53 were scrambled at 100 ? hours , and reported attacking a lone fighter near Abu Dweis, Ofw. Friedel shooting this down. It would appear that Strachen's aircraft was damaged by flak and that he turned for base, being attacked after he had left his escort.

    Thanks Col

What I was querying was Alan date of 20 Oct rather than 20 Sep which you have quoted confirming the CWGC date.

    Cheers
