Default Blenheim query 404 RCAF Sq

    Hi All,

According to David Hanson`s Shetland Crash Log two Blenheim IVs collided near Lerwick and one Z6339 crashed on Horse of the Knabb and other T1946 crash landed on Bressay Island. The date of this accident according to the Shetland Times & Air Britain was 31/10/41. Yet David quotes 01/11/41.

Also according to CWGC the pilot F/Sgt R.F.Leighton RCAF died on 01/01/41 `They Shall Grow Not Old` book also gives this date & Z6339. Yet according to CWGC the two crew David`s crash log quotes AC1 Thomas A.Gray & AC2 Thomas Clapperton died on 01/11/41.

Can anyone tidy this mess up please? Has CWGC got it wrong? Was F/Sgt Leighton the pilot of Z6339?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Dave

    Hi Dave
From Warner's Blenheim these a/c were lost "off the Shetlands" on 1/11/41 by collision
T1946 had Sgt R Leighton as pilot with 2 passengers, AC1 T Gray and AC2 T Clapperton all 3 reported as killed
Z6339,had P/O Inglis as pilot with Cpl H Holmes F2E as passenger. Both Injured. There is no explanation of the F2E and I don't recognise it
The losses are recorded as non-operational but both a/c are acknowledged as 404 Sqn
The Shetland Times date may have arisen from the wartime censorship which delayed the reporting of any incidents and sometimes disguised the place and date. You would need to know the date of publication in the paper
    Regards
    Dick

    Hi Dick

F2E is a Fitter II Engines. A Fitter II was the highest level of ground tradesman at that time.

    Hello Dave,

    The Wherefore:

    404 Squadron R.C.A.F.

    November & December 1941.

    November 1941.

Sadly, during the first week of November a further six aircrew were killed*.

On 1 November, Blenheim 6339 piloted by P/O (D.H.) Inglis collided with Blenheim T1946 piloted by F/S R F Leighton near Lerwick, Shetland Islands. "Inglis' aircraft chewed off the elevators on Leighton's aircraft which from about 200 feet dived on the rocks and exploded." F/S Leighton and his two passengers, AC1 T A Gray and AC2 T Clapperton, died in the crash while P/O Inglis and his passengers survived with only minor injuries. This flight was being conducted as part of a three-plane formation in an Air Display over Lerwick in aid of War Weapons Week. Sgt Christison was the pilot of the third Blenheim with passengers Sgt Lewis and Cpl Barrett.

    See: http://404squadron.com/nov1941.html

    * For other three casualties, see Ross' CCL1/161 (5th November, 1941).

    Thanks Fella`s,

I am still wondering about that date on CWGC site though, see below:

    Name: LEIGHTON, ROBERT FREDERICK
    Initials: R F
    Nationality: Canadian
    Rank: Flight Sergeant (Pilot)
    Regiment/Service: Royal Canadian Air Force
    Unit Text: 404 Sqdn.
    Age: 25
    Date of Death: 01/01/1941
    Service No: R/74598
Additional information: Son of Percival Robert and Laura Maria Leighton, of Duncan, British Columbia, Canada.
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
    Grave/Memorial Reference: Terrace 9. Grave 45.
    Cemetery: LERWICK NEW CEMETERY

Should I contact the War Graves to say they got it wrong? Odd but I don`t appear to have a photo of his headstone either and I thought I had photographed them all on my trip up there last year, so can`t refer to that in case it is just a CWG website error.

Has anyone else found errors in dates on CWGC site?

    Regards
    Dave

    Dave

The Scottish death register confirms that Leighton and Clapperton were killed at The Knab, Lerwick on 1/11/41 (Gray may be listed on a previous page which I have not looked at).

As a matter of interest, I brought one of these date errors to the notice of CWGC in the past, but for the amendment to be accepted I had to provide a copy death certificate.

    Thanks Dave,

We have friends up in Shetland at the moment so will ask them to take a look at the headstone to see the date, if it differs then I`ll take it from there.
