Can any one give me the locatiion referred to as 9RW in a service record.

Hi Nick,

RW = Receiving Wing, i.e. No. 9 Receiving Wing.

All I found about this unit is:
No. 9 Receiving Wing, Stratford on Avon 1940 Nov.-1941 May

9RW is a little more fully described in Air-Britain's 'RAF Flying Training and Support Units since 1912':

No.9 Receiving Wing
Formed 20.11.40 at Stratford-on-Avon; Redesignated No.9 Initial Training Wing 14.7.41.

Formed 14.6.41 ex-No.9 RW at Arden Hotel, Stratford-on-Avon; Disbanded 25.5.44. (PNB)

I have googled the Arden hotel and it is a new developement presumably replacing the old one which may have been a country type hotel in large grounds does this sound likely?what would have happened at an RW?

Nick I am not specialist on such a type of units but I suppose it serves as the first instance for enlistment, i.e. fill papers, getting ID, kit, first drill, King's Regulations (Air), vaccinations, medical examination, etc.

Note that the RW later became an ITW. It seems that, as Pavel details, much of what was undertaken there was likely to have been similar to what took place at an ITW.

The RAFFTUS 1912 volume is one of those books that once you have a copy you will wonder how on earth you managed to get along without one for so long!
