P/O Adam H.B.C. SALAMAN - 116751.

D - Also looking for unit and possible cause of death of:
Sgt Howard R. FIDGIN - 1382134 - commemorated on Panel 83 of the Runnymede Memorial.

E - Proposed aircraft losses:
Hudson III - V8975 - 6 (C)OTU - crashed on take-off Thornaby.
Hotspur Glider - BT789 - 102 GOTU - flew into ground ½ mile E of Kidlington.

The aircraft was making a dive approach and the pilot failed to pull out in time. The glider struck the ground and although the second pilot was injured, the handling pilot was killed.

Don't think so. Bratt, Cook and Smith were lost on a ferry to Gibraltar with Blenheim V BA445 (BCLME - Gunby/Temple - vol.1, page 152).

Colin Jarred was killed whilst a Production Test Pilot, attached to Vickers Supermarine, Henley. When flying Spitfire IV BR643 on a production test flight the engine failed. Attempting a forced landing he collided with trees and crashed at Gates House Farm, Lurgashall, near Midhurst, Sussex, and caught fire. He had previously flown with 41 Squadron from 29 August 1941 to late 1941.

AC2 Norman W. PEARSON - 1414796 - the Birmingham Mail of June 20th 1942 reported the following:

Birmingham Man Killed, Another Injured
As they were cycling on a tandem to their homes in Birmingham last evening, two airmen were hit by a car as they came out of a side road on to the main Tamworth road at Lichfield. Leading Aircraftman Norman William Pearson, of 29, Marlow Road, Erdington, fractured his skull and died. His companion, Leading Aircraftman Edgar Edward Griffiths, of 128 Addison Road, Birmingham, is detained in hospital with a fractured leg and sever laceration of the right side of the face.

With regard to my Great Grandfather, Charles Walter Tipler. I’m currently researching my family tree and have hit a bitof dead end in relation to his service record.


According to family folklore, he was based somewhere inthe Far East but returned home to Leicester after contracting malaria andunfortunately died on 18^th June 1942 aged 35. I’ve traced his infoon forces war records, ancestry.co.uk etc and can see that he joined theR.A.F.V.R around June 1940 and was then promoted (I think) to leadingaircraftman.

I’d really like to get to know more about the two years heserved, where and in which squadrons, so any help or advice on this would alsobe greatly appreciated.
