    Default W/O R Mevans RAAF.

    Hello All,

On 6/7-12-1944, the crew of No.186 Sqn Lancaster I HK680, had to bale out after their aircraft iced up, and was then hit by lightning.(see:BCL5/504).

One of the crew is named as W/O R Mevans RAAF. No airman of this name appears on the DVA RAAF Nominal Roll.

Can anyone positively identify this airman?

    Any help appreciated,

    Col.

Could it be a typo for R M Evans?

    Hello Amrit,

    Been down that track!

One l had in mind was AUS418503 F/O Robert Morrison Evans RAAF. Not enough documentation available to positively connect him with 'Mevans'.

This was brought up on the 'Old Board', but the answer was supplied via a PM (per Steve Smith, from memory), not publicly.

Also tried crewmate of 'Mevans', AUS420264 F/O Robert Charles Powers RAAF. Only an undigitised A9300 available at the NAA.

    Thanks,

    Col.

    Col,

I ran a serach for 'vans,' (i.e. names ending in vans) on my database of 60,000 names but the only surname to come up was Evans. So a case for an Evans in your search appears strong.

    Errol,

At least, I can eliminate 'Mevans' from future RNZAF searches.

I think I'll run with 'Evans', seems more likely.

    Thanks for that,

    Col.

    Hi Col,
Can you give an indication of his trade or if not what sequence the crew was named, as you know I am trawling the Australian nominal role on regular basis at moment so will see what I can come up with.

    Regards,
    Rob Jerram.

    Rob,

The crew of HK680, as given by Bill Chorley, in BCL5/504:

    F/O R C Powers RAAF
    Sgt H Short
    Sgt R B Best
    WO2 N Latondresse RCAF
    W/O R Mevans RAAF
    F/S W A Hemsley
    F/S J Skelton DFM

Thus indicating, that 'Mevans' was a W.Op.

    Hi Col,
It would appear that all survived this experience except F/S John Skelton DFM 1697217 186 Squadron died 6th December 1944 aged 21. Air Gunner.
Records at Aust N.A for Flt/Lt Robert Charles Powers unfortunately not open.
If we can get more info on Skelton, it may throw some light on who he flew with and hopefully Mevans or Evans.
    Regards,
    Rob Jerram.

    Hi Col,
207 Squadron RAF Association Airforces Memorial has Sgt John Skelton as airgunner on Lancaster DV191 EM-Q, which was part of the Peenemunde Raid 17/8/43.

    Hi Rob,

    Thanks for your efforts.

As you would well know, even the smallest clue can lead to a solution.

I'm sure, Steve 'Smudger' Smith, could solve this dilemma. Unfortunately, he hasn't posted for ages.

    Regards,

    Col.
