    Default Unaccounted airmen - 23-6-1942

What was the place of death registration for:
AC2 Robert W. DOUGLAS - 1040316 - 613 Sqn (Twinwood Farm, Bedfordshire), who died on active service.

Also looking for unit and possible cause of death of:
Sgt Jacob L. SMITH - 778643 (from S.Rhodesia), whose name is commemorated on Panel 93 of the Runnymede Memorial.

Regards and thanks for your help.
    Henk.

    Henk,

No Sgt Jacob L SMITH - 778643 on CWGC.

Do you mean 778676 Sgt John Burton SMITH RAFVR + 26-6-1942?

    If so:

    25/26-6-1942
    102 sqn
    Halifax II W7759 DY-L
    Op: Bremen

Took off 2359 Topcliffe. Lost without trace. All are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

    F/L C C Harris RCAF +
    Sgt G C Pratt +
    Sgt V J F Bicat +
    Sgt T H May +
    Sgt J P Hankins +
    Sgt J B Smith + (Runnymede Memorial Panel 93)

    See: BCL3/136 and BCL9/130.

Smith mentioned in: A Pride of Eagles:The Definitive History of the Rhodesian Air Force 1920 - 1980./Salt p.794.

Thanks Col for your quick reply. J.B. SMITH - 778676 is in my files. I have to apologize as I came up with a wrong date and also misspelling. I'm looking for:
Jacob Letterstied SMIT (not SMITH) svcnr 778643; checked again with CWGC and ascertained that the date was 24th June 1942 (in lieu of 23rd).
    Regards,
    Henk.

Listed in Flight on August 27th, 1942 as Missing, Believed Killed On Active Service. This was then confirmed on July 22nd, 1943.

Thanks Col for info on SMIT. 5 OTU means he was Coastal command and I think Ross will come up with more info on this airman and his Beaufort.
    Regards,
    Henk.
