Proposed Aircraft Losses 24-6-1942:

Hotspur Glider - BT771 - AFEE - crashed on landing Tatton Mere, Cheshire.

Colin Cummings in "Though Without Anger" (pp.76-7), has this incident occurring on 20 June, 1942, not 24-6-1942.

20-Jun-1942 BT771 Hotspur II AFEE Tatton Mere Cheshire.

This sortie was a deliberate ditching in Tatton Mere, as part of experiments to see the survivability aspects of landing the glider in water when fully loaded. The front of the glider disintegrated and Flight Lieutenant Kronfeld*, the test pilot was injured. The report records criptically [sic], that water landings were impractical unless extensive modifications were made to the glider.

* 78782 F/L Robert Kronfeld (later AFC, KCVSA), the renowned glider pilot.
