    Default Unaccounted airmen - 30-6-1942

What were the places of death registration for the following airmen, none of these could be found in the Flight archives:

    AC1 John R. NEEDHAM - 1498840, and
    AC2 Harold STRAW - 1518954.

Also looking for the serial number of a 57 Sqn Wellington (safely returned to Methwold, Norfolk) on board of which P/O (WOp/Ag) John W.A. BUSTIN - RCAF J/6968 was killed by an attacking night fighter on a raid to Bremen.

    Proposed aircraft losses:

    Hotspur Glider - BT618 - 102 GOTU - crashed Bletchington, Oxfordshire.
    Hotspur Glider - BT844 - 102 GOTU - crashed on take-off Kidlington.

Regards and thanks for your help.

Found Kenworthy, same place as Needham.

Sgt (Pilot) George KENWORTHY - 535539; - age 28 Ploughley, Oxfordshire
    AC1 John R. NEEDHAM - 1498840, - Ploughley, Oxfordshire

Both are KOAS listed in same list Sep 3rd magazine.

LAC J Dodds DOAS in the same list.

No sign of Arundale or Straw in Flight magazine.

    Hi Henk

According to 'Though without Anger', Kenworhty was flying BT618 and one other was also killed so I assume this was Needham.

    Default Sgt George Kenworthy RAF

George was one of my father's elder brothers
His place of death was always given as Kidlington by my father
He was killed when the tow hawser snapped, whipped back and took the wing off, some time subsequent to which a length of normal rope was used for the final few feet to the glider, to dampen "whip" (Something I noted and in my mind when I got my gliding wings at RAF Swanton Morley in 1973)
He had been married for 3 weeks to Sybil ( nee Shand from Barrhead) and was the instructor. I think it was his first flight after his honeymoon.
He trained as a pilot at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Previously he served as groundcrew on HMS Glorious ( aircraft carrier, sunk off Norway, not on board)
A regular RAF serviceman, he was 1938 Interservices Welter Weight Boxing Champion.
Any other information on him and the circumstances around his crash would be received with interest

    Thanks for the information Howard.
The location we gave above was only the registration district, Kidlington that you mention is within that district, see link below

    Default Crash site

Thanks - appreciate that was the district. I think the same airfield is still used as a flight training school, although I do not know if the crash was at take off as I guess it would have been a tug tow.

Re a previous query, our family comes from Bradford, Yorkshire. George was born there, at Silk St.

Ah (Correction) - my misunderstanding. You are looking for where their deaths were registered and have the crash site as Bletchingdon, which is as close to the airfield as Kidlington (~2 miles).

If there is any more information on the incident I would appreciate it.

George's younger sisters are still alive - one was WW2 WRAF and the widow of an SNCO who in later years was SWO for RAF Abingdon.
